How To Use This Instagram Ad Cost Calculator
Four inputs, five seconds:
Daily or monthly budget: what you're willing to spend. Start anywhere from $10/day upward; Meta's own minimum is $5/day.
CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions): leave it at the $8.16 default if you don't know yours. Pull the real number from Meta Ads Manager for a tighter estimate.
CTR: 1% is the honest baseline. Below 1% and you're overpaying for every click you get
.Conversion rate and average order value: from Shopify, not from hope.
The calculator returns your estimated impressions, clicks, CPC, purchases, cost per purchase and the ROAS you need to break even. Change one input at a time to see which lever actually moves your numbers.
The Instagram Ad Cost Formula
Every Instagram cost estimate reduces to five lines of arithmetic:
Impressions = (Budget ÷ CPM) × 1,000
Clicks = Impressions × CTR
CPC = Budget ÷ Clicks
Purchases = Clicks × Conversion rate
Cost per purchase = Budget ÷ Purchases
ROAS = (Purchases × AOV) ÷ Budget
Worked example: $3,000/month at a $9 CPM buys 333,000 impressions. At a 1.2% CTR that's ~4,000 clicks, or $0.75 per click. At a 2% conversion rate you get 80 purchases at $37.50 each. With a $95 average order value, that's 2.53x ROAS.
Your break-even ROAS is 1 ÷ gross margin. At a 40% margin you need 2.5x just to stand still. Everything below that is tuition.
How Much Do Instagram Ads Cost In 2026?
No fixed rate card. Instagram runs a live auction, so your cost is set by your bid, your ad quality, your target audience and how many other advertisers want the same person. Current 2026 benchmarks:
Five things move those numbers more than anything else:
Ad placement. Reels sit at roughly $4–$7 CPM, 30–50% cheaper than feed. Stories land in between. Explore is usually the cheapest inventory on the platform.
Ad format. Static photo ads run $0.70–$1.00 per click, video closer to $1.50, carousels in between. Video costs more per click and usually converts harder.
Target audience. Broad audiences in cheap geos can run under $5 CPM; a narrow US 25–34 lookalike in a competitive niche can pass $20.
Seasonality. Q4 CPMs routinely climb 30–50%. Some accounts see CPC pass $3 in peak shopping weeks.
Conversion rate. The one nobody wants to hear. A 1% to 2% lift on your landing page halves your cost per purchase without touching the ad account.
Instagram Ads Cost Per Day Vs Per Month: How Much Should You Spend?
Most small businesses land between $100 and $500/month. That's fine for learning and thin for scaling: at a $9 CPM, $300/month buys ~33,000 impressions, which is a sample size, not a strategy.
Rule of thumb: budget at least 10x your target cost per purchase per ad set per day. If you want $30 CPAs, $30/day per ad set is the floor, not the plan.
5 Ways To Lower Your Instagram Ad Costs
Buy Reels placements deliberately. At $4–$7 CPM versus $8–$12 in feed, the same budget buys close to double the impressions.
Fix CTR before you touch bids. Under 1% means the creative is the problem. A CTR lift from 0.8% to 1.6% halves your CPC with zero extra spend.
Consolidate ad sets. Five ad sets on $20/day each never exit the learning phase. One at $100/day does, and Meta's algorithm gets the ~50 conversions/week it needs to optimise.
Test three hooks, not three campaigns. The first 3 seconds decide your CPM. Steal winning angles from live competitor ads instead of guessing.
Retarget before you prospect harder. Warm audiences convert 3–5x better, which drags your blended cost per purchase down even when CPMs are ugly.
