How Does the Shopify Theme Detector Work?

Every Shopify store publishes a small block of JSON data in its page source that includes the active theme's name and ID. This tool fetches that source, parses the window.Shopify object, and extracts the theme name — giving you an accurate result in under three seconds.

For stores where that data isn't exposed, the detector falls back to analyzing asset file URLs, CSS class signatures, and JavaScript variable names that are unique to specific themes.

What Information Does the Detector Return?

  1. Theme name — The exact name of the active theme

  2. Theme developer — Who built it (Shopify, Archetype, Pixel Union, etc.)

  3. Price — Whether the theme is free or paid, and approximate cost

  4. Theme Store link — Direct link to buy or preview the theme

  5. Page builder detection — If the store uses PageFly, GemPages, or Shogun on top of their theme

What Information Does the Detector Return?

A store's theme shapes everything — conversion rate, mobile experience, page speed, and brand perception. Knowing what theme a top competitor uses helps you:

  1. Replicate a high-converting store structure without starting from scratch

  2. Understand why a competitor's site feels faster or converts better

  3. Find premium themes used by brands in your niche before paying for trial-and-error

  4. Identify whether a competitor built custom or bought an off-the-shelf theme

Among paid themes, Turbo by Out of the Sandbox is dominant in high-volume DTC stores for its speed, while Prestige by Maestrooo is the go-to for luxury and lifestyle brands. Impulse and Motion by Archetype Themes are popular with apparel and fashion stores.

Is this tool accurate?

For most standard Shopify stores, yes — Shopify exposes the theme name in the page's JavaScript, which this tool reads directly. Custom or headless stores may not expose this data, in which case the detector falls back to secondary signals. Accuracy is approximately 85–95% for standard Shopify setups.
